Biography, Rasaan 华山 Liddell

Rasaan 华山 Liddell is the Founder and Executive Director of the Afro-Sino Chamber of Commerce.  After spending the last eight years working in China, he brings to the organization a record of exceptional leadership and strategic vision in Asian affairs, particularly as relates to educational training and exploration of mutual cultural perspectives. Initially, upon his return to the United States, he volunteered for a position as the acting Associate Director of the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, an organization that assisted with helping establish Chicago as a vibrant and exciting destination for individual and business travelers from China.

In 2005, after completing his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Chicago Mr. Liddell began an odyssey that would influence and shape his entire world view, life and career.  Though speaking not a word of any Chinese dialect, he began teaching and after receiving his Master's degree accepted a faculty position as Adjunct Instructor of Business English, Marketing and Entrepreneurship at Guangyuan Teachers College  四川省广元师范学校 in Sichuan Province, People’s Republic of China (www.gysfxx.com.cn/)‎.  When he arrived they accepted him with enthusiasm and a much required degree of patience.  It is fair to say they taught him as much as he taught them.  During his tenure he also independently researched, wrote and published 5 English books for primary and middle schools. Mr. Liddell was recognized by the Chinese government as a Foreign Expert of Culture & Education.  Additionally, he was the recipient of the “2008 Educator of the Year” award for excellence in teaching. For service in the aftermath of the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake he was awarded for valor by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Experts and Affairs.  Finally, Mr. Liddell also served as President and CEO of the American English Academy, an English training center.

Prior to his journey to China, Mr. Liddell served in various marketing positions. These included serving as a Promotions Coordinator for ESPN. In that role he assisted in the planning and hosting of major local events, including The Dan Patrick Roast and the Walter Payton Celebrity Golf outing.  From 2001 to 2003 he was Public Relations Assistant for Houston’s/Bandera/Hillstone restaurant group where he coordinated and assisted in the management of public relations and promotions events.

A Chicago native, Mr. Liddell earned his bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Loyola University-Chicago and his master’s degree in Asian Studies-Chinese from Sichuan/Hong Kong University. As evidenced by his heroic efforts in the Sichuan Earthquake rescue, he believes in community service and lives by the old adage that “we are our brother’s keeper”.  He, therefore considers it an honor and essentially a personal mandate to give of his time to worthy charitable and nonprofit organizations.  He is a member of the Sponsorship Committee at the University of Chicago Charter School, where he also serves as an officer of the FTCO committee. He is also a member of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and sits on the programs committee for the United Nations Association, Greater Chicago Chapter and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the scholastic honor society.  Further, he has volunteered his time to Chicago Sister Cities International and has served as Ambassador for the Chinese-American Service League.
