History of the English Corner
Popularized in China, the term “English Corner” refers to periods of instruction in English held at grade schools, colleges or often at one of the many public squares located in many Chinese cities. These sessions may be led by Chinese teachers or by teachers who are native speakers of English. The emphasis is on improving the oral English skills of the participants. Though informal, session topics can be far ranging. Interestingly, the focus is often on cultural activities like holidays commonly celebrated in English speaking countries. Throughout these sessions Chinese students and city residents can be seen passionately practicing their English with hundreds of onlookers.
